This is a question I get all the time. “Can I walk on a spray foam roof?”. The answer is “yes, you can!”. Not only can you walk on a spray foam roof, but thousands upon thousands of commercial spray foam roofs have ongoing maintenance performed on a daily basis (compressors, HVAC units, Skylights, etc…). Residential roof? No problem. Sprayed polyurethane foam is a closed cell, solid, 1.5″ – 2.0″ thick insulated membrane.
If you took a sharp object like a screwdriver or even a hammer and hit it as hard as you could on your existing conventional roofing system like tar & gravel, torch down or bitumen, it would create permanent damage to the roof and you would need an expert to repair it, leaving it with even more seams than it already has. With spray foam, if you took this same example, the foam would close back on itself (it only compresses, it does not crack or break), therefore with a little bit of polyurethane caulking (Sikaflex) the damage easily fixable by you and back to normal with no seams!
SPRAY FOAM ROOFS ARE EXTREMELY DURABLE AND shhhh… yes, you can walk on them. You can even jump up and down if you want. 🙂
